  • January 1 - The British Broadcasting Company becomes the British Broadcasting Corporation.
  • April 7 - Bell Telephone Company transmits an image of Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover 200 miles over telephone lines which becomes the first successful long distance demonstration of television
  • May - Philo Farnsworth transmits the first experimental electronic television pictures
  • May 23 - The first demonstration of television before a large audience. Nearly 600 members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Institute of Radio Engineers view the demonstration at the Bell Telephone Building in New York City.
  • September John Logie Baird demonstrates the first ever system for recording television. His Phonovision video disc records 30-line television pictures and sound on conventional 78rpm gramophone records.
  • Baird transmits a television signal from London to Glasgow over a telephone line.

  • The Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System (later known as CBS) is formed
