The racial makeup of the town is 73.03% White, 21.76% African American, 0.94% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.76% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 3.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,526 households out of which 25.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.83.
