Adrenochrome is an oxidation byproduct of adrenaline that acts as a psychoactive drug.

Hunter S. Thompson mentions adrenochrome in his book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In the book it was derived from a living donor's adrenal gland (removing it kills them). As such, it is purported to be very exotic, and very intense.

In the DVD commentary of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, director Terry Gilliam admits that adrenochrome is fictional hyperbole.
