Almería (2002 pop. 173,338) is the capital of the province of Almerķa in Andalusia, Spain. It is located in southeastern Spain on the Mediterranean Sea.

Almería was founded in 955 by Abd-ar-rahman III during the Moorish rule of Andalusia, as the caliphate's principal port.

It has been chosen to host the XVth Mediterranean Games in 2005.
