Aloha is an unincorporated community located in Washington County, Oregon. It was named in 1912 by Robert Caples, after the Hawaiian greeting, although the name is pronounced differently -- "A-low-wa". As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 41,741.

History

Aloha has been, for most of its existence, a rural community. With the increase of suburban development in eastern Washington County starting in the 1950s, Aloha would have become another indistinguishable block of housing when Intel bought land in 1974 at the intersection of the Tualatin Valley Highway and 198th Street, which became the first of several plants Intel has built in Washington County between Hillsboro and Beaverton.

Geography

Aloha is located at 45°29'25" North, 122°52'19" West (45.490239, -122.872007)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 19.1 km² (7.4 mi²). 19.1 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 41,741 people, 14,228 households, and 10,841 families residing in this community. The population density is 2,186.7/km² (5,660.5/mi²). There are 14,851 housing units at an average density of 778.0/km² (2,013.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 79.40% White, 1.35% African American, 0.78% Native American, 7.69% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 6.70% from other races, and 3.72% from two or more races. 12.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,228 households out of which 42.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% are non-families. 16.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.28.

In this community the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 35.0% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.8 males.

The median income for a household in this community is $52,299, and the median income for a family is $56,566. Males have a median income of $40,369 versus $29,921 for females. The per capita income for this community is $19,685. 7.9% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 9.4% are under the age of 18 and 5.2% are 65 or older.
