Aptos is a town located in Santa Cruz County, California. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,396.

For much of the later part of his life, Aptos was the home of the composer Lou Harrison.

Geography

Aptos is located at 36°58'53" North, 121°54'27" West (36.981500, -121.907432)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 18.2 km² (7.0 mi²). 18.2 km² (7.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 9,396 people, 4,055 households, and 2,428 families residing in the town. The population density is 517.5/km² (1,339.6/mi²). There are 4,486 housing units at an average density of 247.1/km² (639.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.38% White, 0.56% African American, 0.65% Native American, 2.39% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 2.49% from other races, and 3.42% from two or more races. 6.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,055 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% are non-families. 27.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.3% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $61,843, and the median income for a family is $73,515. Males have a median income of $51,848 versus $40,050 for females. The per capita income for the town is $33,210. 7.1% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.4% are under the age of 18 and 6.2% are 65 or older.
