Baia Mare (Nagybánya in Hungarian) is a Romanian city located in Maramures county, in the northwest part of the country near the border with Ukraine. The city has a population of 137,976, according to the 2002 census. In 1992, the city had a population of 149,205.

History

Baia Mare has a rich history, and was first mentioned in 1142 when it was settled by the Saxons and King Geza II. The settlement was called Frauendorf.
