Established in northern Mexico in the late 1960s, banda music exploded in popularity in the late 1990s throughout Mexico and in the southwest United States, primarily in Texas and California but also in Iowa, Kansas, and Illinois. Thanks to the rapidly rising popularity of La Banda Sinaloense, the genre has taken on a different role.
