Geography Bloomfield is located at 37°54'52" North, 85°19'9" West (37.914332, -85.319232)1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.78% is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 855 people, 347 households, and 231 families residing in the city. The population density is 255.9/km² (665.2/mi²). There are 384 housing units at an average density of 114.9/km² (298.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.49% White, 11.46% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 347 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 29.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.03. In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $33,393, and the median income for a family is $40,109. Males have a median income of $34,375 versus $20,515 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,359. 12.6% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.9% are under the age of 18 and 23.8% are 65 or older. A Tobacco Festival, culminating in a tobacco-spitting contest was a major event in this town for many years, reflecting it's history as a tobacco market for the area. It's also home to the Bloomfield Mill, which ground corn and wheat meal for local farmers. The historical prosperity of the area is evidenced by a bank and several stores in the "downtown" area.
