Brakel is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Brakel proper, Elst, Everbeek, Michelbeke, Nederbrakel, Opbrakel, Parike and Zegelsem. On January 1st, 2000 Brakel had a total population of 13,709 (6,633 males and 7,076 females). The total area is 57.04 km² which gives a population density of 240.34 inhabitants per km².
