Burtnieki district is located in North Latvia. In earlier times, Burtnieki embraced very a wide territory around lake Burtnieks. Burtnieki was mentioned for in the chronicle by Indrikis from Livonia. Burtnieki district in historical documents for the first time was mentioned in 1208.
