Carlos Prio Socarras was President of Cuba from 1948 until he was deposed by a military coup led by Fulgencio Batista in 1952. Although popularly elected, his presidency was marred by violence among political factions and widespread corruption. Prio became extremely wealthy through his involvement in politics. He used some of the money to support the efforts of Fidel Castro against the Batista regime. However, he broke with Castro after the latter seized power in 1959. He spent his final years as a developer and businessman in Miami.
