Charles Tufts (1781 - 1876) donated twenty acres of land in Medford, Massachusetts for what was to be named Tufts University. In time, Charles Tufts donated another 80 acres, bring the campus to 100 acres.

Tufts made his fortune through his brickmaking factory.

Tufts is a descendant of Peter Tufts, an early colonist who came to the US from England in 1638.
