WHAT IS COLON HYDROTHERAPY (Colonics)?

Colon Hydrotherapy is a more extended and complete way of cleansing the colon. Colon Hydrotherapy is a gentle infusion of filtered; temperature controlled water into the colon. As it circulates throughout the 5 feet of large intestine it softens and loosens waste coaxing the body to give up its debris through natural peristalsis. Colonic muscle tone is improved, which facilitates peristaltic action and enhanced absorption of nutrients, while helping to minimize the absorption of toxic waste material collecting in the colon.

While claims are made that the enema circulates through the colon, no evidence exists that enemas of any type are able to move fluids up beyond the splenic flexure of the colon. Enemas do not clear the ascending or transverse colon as is shown by colonoscopy after colonics. Additionally, there is no evidence of improved muscle tone.

UNHEALTHY COLON

Constipation, diarrhea, frequent severe headaches, backaches, fatigue, bad breathe, foul body odor, irritability, frequent mental confusion chronic skin problems, abdominal gas and bloating, lower back pain, low resistance to colds and infections diminished vitality…. These symptoms may be indicating you need to clean your body’s elimination system. Many people who experience this type of cleansing have exclaimed its benefits in relief of these symptoms.

There is no evidence that a colonic provides any benefit beyond that of using a chronic osmotic laxative such as a magnesium containing laxative.

AFTER COLON HYDROTHERAPY

Donald J. Mantell, M.D. Wrote, “Conventional diets of today comprised of refined, processed foods, high in saturated fats and low in natural fiber, contribute to the magnitude of the constipation problem. The elimination of undigested food and other waste products are as important as the proper digestion and assimilation of foodstuffs. Waste material remaining too long in the digestive system results in fermentation and putrefaction of these substances and subsequent proliferation of bacteria and their toxins. This natural cleansing process effectively resolves the symptoms directly and indirectly related to dysfunction of the large intestine.” Whether the natural cleansing process in this quote is a colonic is unclear.

The objective is now to provide the body with adequate fiber for digestion. A diet should be rich in vegetables. Many plant foods are high in fiber. Foods high in fiber are beneficial to colon function in several ways. Bacterial breakdown products of fiber contribute about 100 Calories a day in nourishment of the colonic mucosal lining. Soluble fiber, as is found in psyllium, bind cholesterol and perhaps other toxins, and slows intestinal motion. Insoulble fiber, such as bran fiber, speed the passage of stool through the intestine. All fiber holds water to soften the stool. There is no clear benefit of raw versus cooked food in regards to fiber effects.

People who need colonics may need to see a physician to see if there is a cause of the constipation, such as colon cancer, thyroid abnormalities, mineral disturbances, or a number of other conditions.
