Colonie is a town located in Albany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 79,258.

United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 149.9 km² (57.9 mi²). 145.2 km² (56.1 mi²) of it is land and 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.11% water.

census of 2000, there are 79,258 people, 30,980 households, and 20,539 families residing in the town. The population density is 545.8/km² (1,413.6/mi²). There are 32,280 housing units at an average density of 222.3 persons/km² (575.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 90.55% White, 3.96% African American, 0.15% Native American, 3.59% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. 1.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 30,980 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 33.7% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.00. In the town the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.
