The city is the largest in the state, with a population of 711,470 as of the 2000 census. According to recent U.S. census estimates, the metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Cincinnati are both larger than the Columbus metropolitan area, whose metropolitan area has a population of 1,500,000. Columbus is the county seat of Franklin County.
Columbus is the home of the Ohio State University, which has the distinction of being the second largest single campus in the United States (48,003 total enrollment according to the OSU Office of University Relations ). The state government and the university together dominate city life.
Columbus is home to many sports teams, including the Columbus Clippers minor league baseball team the Columbus Crew Major League Soccer team, and the Columbus Blue Jackets National Hockey League team.

The racial makeup of the city is 67.93% White, 24.47% African American, 0.29% Native American, 3.44% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races. 2.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 301,534 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.1% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.2% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
