The principality of Liechtenstein is divided into eleven communities (Gemeinden - singular Gemeinde), most consisting of only a single town. These are:

  • Vaduz - located along the Rhine, in the centre of the country
  • Schaan - the most populous community, just north of Vaduz
  • Balzers - in the southern point of the country, also includes the town of Mäls
  • Triesen - on the Rhine, just south of Vaduz
  • Eschen - in the north, includes the town of Nendeln
  • Mauren - in the north, close to Eschen, includes Schaanwald
  • Triesenberg - between Vaduz and Triesen, includes the towns of Steg and Malbun
  • Ruggell - on the Rhine, northernmost community of Liechtenstein
  • Gamprin - on the Rhine, just west of Eschen, including the town of Bendern
  • Schellenberg - in the north
  • Planken - smallest community, in north central Liechtenstein
