\nConecuh County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is an American Indian word, of unknown significance. As of 2000 the population was 14,089. Its county seat is Evergreen.

History

\nConecuh County was established on February 13, 1818.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,208 km² (853 mi²). 2,204 km² (851 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 14,089 people, 5,792 households, and 3,938 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (17/mi²). There are 7,265 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 55.40% White, 43.55% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,792 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% are married couples living together, 16.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.00% are non-families. 30.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.01. In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $22,111, and the median income for a family is $31,424. Males have a median income of $28,115 versus $19,350 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,964. 26.60% of the population and 21.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 36.10% are under the age of 18 and 28.90% are 65 or older.
