Some common abbreviations used in cryptic crosswords.

  • Roman numerals are often used, for example the word "six" in the clue might indicate that the answer has "vi" in it.
  • Country codes - "swiss" or "in switzerland" could indicate the letters "ch", for example.
  • "Church" often means "ch", too.
  • Cities and states: New York could clue "ny", California "cal", etcetera.
  • "Model" is sometimes used (especially on the Guardian) to mean "t", as in Model T Ford.
  • Beginner, novice, student and other synonyms can mean "L" (as in L-plate).
  • Scientific abbreviations: "s"peed, "d"istance, "t"ime, "v"elocity and many others are used.

  • AC for accountant/Account
