History

\nSince 1918, Dahlgren has been the site of a U.S. Naval base named for Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. It was then the "U.S. Naval Proving Ground" but was renamed, in about 1940, "U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory," and again, in 1974, "U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center." The "U.S. Naval Space Surveillance Systems" command is also at that base.

census of 2000, there are 997 people, 456 households, and 260 families residing in the town. The population density is 340.7/km² (885.2/mi²). There are 510 housing units at an average density of 174.3/km² (452.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 70.31% White, 25.28% African American, 0.30% Native American, 1.50% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 456 households out of which 24.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% are married couples living together, 11.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.8% are non-families. 36.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.85. In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males. The median income for a household in the town is $49,545, and the median income for a family is $53,500. Males have a median income of $45,714 versus $21,029 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,928. 8.5% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 12.7% are under the age of 18 and 10.5% are 65 or older.
