She is a member of the Labour Party and has Paymaster General since 1999; she was previously Financial Secretary to the Treasury. She was first elected to Parliament at the 1987 general election, after her constituency party de-selected the sitting MP Michael Cocks. At the time she was regarded as a left-winger and was known as "Red Dawn", but is now a New Labour loyalist. She is a former member of Avon County Council. This article is from Wikipedia.
