Détente was the general reduction in the tension between the Soviet Union and the United States and a "warming" of the Cold War that occurred from the late 1960s on.
The policy was pursued by President Richard Nixon and constituted constructive engagement with Communist governments, as opposed to previous policies of containment and proactive engagement. Sino-American relations greatly improved, culminating with a visit to China by Nixon.
