Essex is a census-designated place (CDP) located in the town of Essex in Essex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,426.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.93% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,426 people, 581 households, and 379 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 263.4/km² (683.4/mi²). There are 619 housing units at an average density of 114.4 persons/km² (296.7 persons/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.88% White, 0.21% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 581 households out of which 31.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 34.6% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
