A freguesia is a section of a municipality in Portugal. The closest equivalent in the English-speaking world would be a borough in the city of New York.

Municipalities, which have their seat in a city or town, can contain additional freguesias outside the city proper, but under the auspices of that city or town. The cities and towns themselves can be made up of multiple freguesias. For example, Lisbon (the capital) is made up of has 53.

There are 4,257 freguesias in Portugal.
