Gallatin is a city located in Sumner County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,230. It is the county seat of Sumner County6.

Gallatin was the headquarters of Dot Records.

Geography

Gallatin is located at 36°22'53" North, 86°27'5" West (36.381370, -86.451315)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 58.2 km² (22.5 mi²). 56.9 km² (22.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.18% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 23,230 people, 8,963 households, and 6,193 families residing in the city. The population density is 408.2/km² (1,057.3/mi²). There are 9,600 housing units at an average density of 168.7/km² (436.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.30% White, 17.57% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 2.02% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 3.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,963 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% are married couples living together, 16.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.
