GarageBand is a software application for music creation that is made and distributed by Apple Computer for the Mac OS X operating system. It was announced during the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco on 6 January 2004 (MacMinute, 2004) and planned for release within a couple of weeks following the Expo as part of iLife '04 (Gillmor, 2004).

GarageBand is considered to be an effect of Apple's eighteen-month-prior takeover (Takeover, 2004) of Emagic (Orlowski, 2004).

Upon the release of GarageBand, more than one market analyst (M. Gartenberg, as cited in Fortt, 2004, and T. Bajarin, as cited in Martell, 2004) predicted that GarageBand's popularity would significantly increase sales of Apple's personal computers because it's only available for that platform (it's also included with new systems at no extra charge).
