Gator can mean:

  • A short form of alligator. This apocopation of the word is especially associated with Florida, and the sports teams of the University of Florida at Gainsville are known as Florida Gators (although that term is most commonly used to refer to the University's football team). In a Simpsons episode in which the family visits the state and must escape after they are accused of killing an alligator, they are charged with the crime of "gatorcide".
  • Gatorade is a popular brand of sports drink, developed at the University of Florida.
  • An internet advertising program made by Claria Corporation. Many feel that Gator acts like spyware, but on installation Gator notifies the user (although it is arguable as to how clearly) that users are adequately notified before installation. Gator do not define their software to be spyware, but many believe it to act exactly like many other spyware variants.
