\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,682 km² (649 mi²). 1,657 km² (640 mi²) of it is land and 25 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.49% water.
Demographics
\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 436,141 people, 169,825 households, and 115,990 families residing in the county. The population density is 263/km² (682/mi²). There are 183,630 housing units at an average density of 111/km² (287/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.29% White, 20.37% Black or African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. 2.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 169,825 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.40% are married couples living together, 16.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.70% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.50 males.
