Born in Kirksville, Missouri, she was known more as a Broadway actress than as a Hollywood star. Her first movie role, in Hondo, garnered her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In all, despite her relatively small filmography, Page received eight Academy Award nominations. Page was married to actor Rip Torn from 1961 until her death.
