\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,861 km² (719 mi²). 1,846 km² (713 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.82% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 72.79% White, 26.18% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,148 households out of which 37.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.20% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.00% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.12. In the county the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 13.10% from 18 to 24, 32.10% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
