"haiduc" is the name given in Romania to that one who was more than just a thief, something like Robin Hood. There were called "haiduci" (plural) only those who attacked just boyars and helped poor peasans with a part of the booty (usually a large part). Of course some of them helped local peasants just to ensure their support.
