\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,602 people, 11,975 households, and 9,136 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 13,526 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.77% White, 5.79% Black or African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 23.76% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. 47.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,975 households out of which 40.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.70% are non-families. 21.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
