Handy Township is a township located in Livingston County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 7,004.

Geography

United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 89.6 km² (34.6 mi²). 89.3 km² (34.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

Demographics

census of 2000, there are 7,004 people, 2,504 households, and 1,837 families residing in the township. The population density is 78.4/km² (203.0/mi²). There are 2,594 housing units at an average density of 29.0/km² (75.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.04% White, 0.19% African American, 0.97% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,504 households out of which 40.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.22. In the township the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males. The median income for a household in the township is $49,447, and the median income for a family is $55,386. Males have a median income of $44,700 versus $29,696 for females.
