Hauula is a rural community in the Ko'olauloa District on the Island of O'ahu, City & County of Honolulu. In Hawaiian, hau'ula means "red hau" (hau is a type of tree: Hibiscus tiliaceus). There is a small commercial center. As of the 2000 Census, the town had a total population of 3,651.

A fringing reef extends off the shoreline. There are several beaches and beach parks in Hau'ula, including Hau'ula Beach Park, Aukai Beach Park, Kakela Beach Park, and Mahakea Beach. Sugarcane was once grown along the narrow coastal plain inland from the highway.

Geography

Hauula is located at 21°36'50" North, 157°54'49" West (21.613850, -157.913543)1. The town is located north of Punalu'u and south of Lā'ie along Kamehameha Highway (State Rte. 83).

According to the United States Census Bureau, Hau'ula had a total area of 17.7 km² (6.8 mi²). 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it was water. The total area was 11.58% water, referring to some part of the Pacific Ocean included (for unknown reasons) in the census tract.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,651 people, 891 households, and 734 families residing in the town. The population density is 233.8/km² (605.9/mi²). There are 1,020 housing units at an average density of 65.3/km² (169.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 16.82% White, 0.77% African American, 0.36% Native American, 5.72% Asian, 37.44% Pacific Islander, 0.96% from other races, and 37.93% from two or more races. 9.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 891 households out of which 45.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.6% are non-families. 11.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.10 and the average family size is 4.46.

In the town the population is spread out with 36.6% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,190, and the median income for a family is $42,813. Males have a median income of $33,125 versus $24,630 for females.
