Heiden is a municipality in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland (800m a.s.l). It has a population of 4,000 (as of 2002). The area of Heiden is 748 hectares.

Around 1650 Wolfhalden and Heiden could not agree about the control over the church. This lead to the creation of a church in each village in 1652, making them independent.

A cog railway leads to Heiden from Rorschach 400 meters below.
