Heilsberg was founded in Prussia in 1240 and in 1306 it became the seat for the Prince-Bishop of Ermeland (Latin Warmia,Varmia) and remained the seat for 500 years.
1454 incorporated to Poland. 1772 annexed by Kingdom of Prussia.
In 1807 a battle took place at Heilsberg between the French under Murat and Soult and the Russians and Prussians under Bennigsen.
Overrun by Soviet troops in 1945 it is since then known as Lidzbark Warminski, Warmia, in northeastern Poland and is situated 38 miles south of Königsberg, today Kaliningrad.
