Hello, Dolly! is a 1969 musical film which tells the story of a turn-of-the-century matchmaker who finds her own match. It stars Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Marianne McAndrew, E.J. Peaker, Tommy Tune, and Fritz Feld.
The subject for Hello, Dolly! originally comes from the play Einen Jux will er sich machen (1842) by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy. This was adapted by Thornton Wilder in his non-musical play The Matchmaker, was produced on Broadway by David Merrick and then made into a 1958 film of the same name, directed by Joseph Anthony and starring Shirley Booth, Anthony Perkins, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Ford, and Robert Morse. The 1969 musical film was adapted by Ernest Lehman and Michael Stewart from their Broadway presentation, also produced by David Merrick, with book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. The title song was sung by Louis Armstrong.
