There have been many male bishops who have had sex with men[1], but Anglican Bishop Gene Robinson is the first man who has been elected a bishop after his homosexuality became known. He was elected Bishop of New Hampshire in 2003, and will take office on March 7, 2004.
Another Anglican, Otis Charles, came out as gay after his retirement. He had been a Bishop in Utah from 1971 to 1993.
Allegations have been made that other bishops, including several Popes, have engaged in sex with men. The evidence presented to support these claims vary by individual. It should be noted that sexual contact with a member of the same sex does not necessarily reflect an exclusively homosexual orientation. Some of these bishops are:
- Pope Benedict IX - (1020 - 1055)
- Francis Cardinal Spellman (1889 - 1967)
- Pope John XII - (937 - 964)
- Pope Julius III - (1487 - 1555)
- Pope Leo X - (1475 - 1521)
- Pope Paul II - (1417 - 1471)
- Pope Sixtus IV - (1414 - 1484)
