The album, along with her signature song, "Respect", were top-selling records upon their first release. I Never Love a Man the Way I Love You is widely regarded one of the best full-lengths in Franklin's catalogue.

"Respect" was a #1 single on Billboard's Pop singles chart, and the titular song was a #9 single. The peaked at #1 on the Black Albums chart and #2 on the Pop Albums chart.
