History

\nIndian River County was created in 1925. It was named for the Indian River Lagoon.

Geography

\nAccording to the
U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,598 km² (617 mi²). 1,303 km² (503 mi²) of it is land and 294 km² (114 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 18.43% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the
census2 of 2000, there are 112,947 people, 49,137 households, and 32,725 families residing in the county. The population density is 87/km² (224/mi²). There are 57,902 housing units at an average density of 44/km² (115/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.43% White, 8.19% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.15% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 6.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 49,137 households out of which 21.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 8.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.72. In the county the population is spread out with 19.20% under the age of 18, 6.00% from 18 to 24, 22.30% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 29.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 47 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,635, and the median income for a family is $46,385. Males have a median income of $30,870 versus $23,379 for females. The per capita income for the county is $27,227. 9.30% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 13.60% are under the age of 18 and 5.70% are 65 or older.
