Inertial compensators, or inertial dampers (as they are more often called) are fictional devices aboard starships in the television series Star Trek, that prevent the crew from turning into - in the words of a show employee - "chunky salsa," when the ship accelerates using its warp drive. In short, "seat belts" that allow the crew and others to do their thing according to the script.
It does this by negating the inertial forces inside the ship.
