She is the Democratic Unionist Party member of Parliament for Strangford, and was elected in the 2001 elections, replacing Ulster Unionist, John Taylor. She had previously been a councillor and Mayor of Castlereagh Borough Council, and was and continues to be a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
