ISO 3864 specifies international standards for safety labels. These labels are graphical, to overcome language barriers. There is an alternative American standard, ANSI Z.535, which is not only incompatible with the international standard, but also suffers from the deficiency of requiring an accompanying text. The inclusion of an accompanying text poses problems for multilingual environments. Even the USA has to be considered multilingual.
