John le Carré is the pseudonym of David John Moore Cornwell (born October 19, 1931) in Poole, Dorset, England.

He studied at the University of Berne, Berne, Switzerland and Oxford University in England, then for a time taught at Eton College before joining the British Foreign Service.

Le Carré is the author of a number of Cold War thrillers, notably those concerning the exploits of George Smiley. Two of the novels in the series, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Smiley's People, were adapted as BBC television series wherein Smiley was played by the actor Alec Guinness.
