Joual is a working-class dialect of the French language. It is a variant of standard Quebecois French, but includes many gallicized English words. Joual is traditionally spoken on the streets of working-class Montreal but was popularized in the mid-20th century by authors such as Michel Tremblay and songwriters such as Robert Charlebois.

  • Common joual words and their standard French equivalent:
    • toé -- toi
    • moé -- moi
    • chu -- je suis
    • ché -- je sais
    • pis -- puis
    • y -- il
    • ouais -- oui
    • y'a -- il y a
