King City is a city located in Washington County, Oregon. Its name was picked arbitrarily by the Tualatin Development Company, Inc., which used a royalty theme in naming the city streets. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,949.

History

Created as a planed adult community, King City was incorporated in March of 1966. The city's legal restrictions which forbid minors from living within its city limits for more than a short time have since been subjected to increasing criticism.

King City was embarrassed when the Oregon Department of Justice revealed that their chief of police, Jim Brooks, had been arrested in Oregon, California and Wyoming on weapons and forgery charges, as well as illegally maintaining several different identities. Soon after this discovery, the city fired Brooks, its only full time police officer.

King City is located at 45°24'4" North, 122°48'11" West (45.400990, -122.803160)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,949 people, 1,389 households, and 480 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,791.7/km² (4,652.9/mi²). There are 1,488 housing units at an average density of 1,367.9/km² (3,552.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.31% White, 0.00% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,389 households out of which 0.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.4% are married couples living together, 2.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 65.4% are non-families. 63.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 55.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.40 and the average family size is 2.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 0.9% under the age of 18, 0.5% from 18 to 24, 3.0% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 78.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 76 years. For every 100 females there are 50.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 49.8 males.
