La Crosse, sometimes spelled "LaCrosse", is a town located in Alachua County, Florida, 42 miles from Jacksonville, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 143. The area around La Crosse is devoted to agriculture, especially potatos; area is known as the "Potato District". Other products of the area include tobacco, vegetables, and cattle.

History

La Crosse was an agricultural village by 1860, in an area mostly given over to cotton farming at the time. A post office was opened in La Crosse in 1881, and La Crosse was incorporated as a town on 17 December, 1897.

Geography

La Crosse is located at 29°50'39" North, 82°24'14" West (29.844171, -82.403993)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.5 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 143 people, 62 households, and 37 families residing in the town. The population density is 41.2/km² (106.9/mi²). There are 64 housing units at an average density of 18.4/km² (47.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 76.92% White, 21.68% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 6.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 62 households out of which 19.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.3% are non-families. 32.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 17.5% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 31.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 107.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $22,750, and the median income for a family is $29,583. Males have a median income of $24,286 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,633. 28.5% of the population and 22.9% of families are below the poverty line.
