LaPorte County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 110,106.

Geography

The county has a total area of 1,588 km2 (613 mi2). 1,549 km2 (598 mi2) of it is land and 38 km2 (15 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 2.41% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 110,106 people, 41,050 households, and 28,611 families residing in the county. The population density is 71/km2 (184/mi2). There are 45,621 housing units at an average density of 29 persons/km2 (76 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 86.26% White, 10.13% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.31% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 3.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 41,050 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 30.30% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 105.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,430, and the median income for a family is $49,872. Males have a median income of $36,686 versus $23,955 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,913. 8.70% of the population and 6.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 11.50% are under the age of 18 and 9.00% are 65 or older.
