\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,015 km² (778 mi²). 1,981 km² (765 mi²) of it is land and 34 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.70% water.

\nAs of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,067 people, 3,316 households, and 2,225 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (10/mi²). There are 3,774 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.85% White, 0.16% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.38% from two or more races. 0.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,316 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.80% are married couples living together, 4.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 30.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.96.
