Layne Staley (August 22, 1967 - April 5, 2002) was the lead singer of the Seattle-based grunge band Alice in Chains, often said to have revolutionized the sound of rock music.

On April 19, 2002, he was found dead in his home two weeks after an apparent heroin overdose, coincidentally on the anniversary of Kurt Cobain's suicide.

Former Alice in Chains guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell now has his own band with new original music, and also does covers of many of the popular Alice in Chains tunes.
